During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 and 2021, many news outlets (inducing CNN, the Wall Street Journal, the LA Times, the New Republic, and more) drew comparisons between the Jaws character of Mayor Vaughn (who is hesitant to close beaches and affect his town's tourist economy despite the clear danger posed by shark attacks) and the local, state, and national figures who for political and economic reasons opposed shutdowns, mask mandates, and (later) vaccinations despite the clear medical benefits they represented.
